2021-2023 GMC Sierra Transmission Lemon Problems
What’s the problem with the GMC Sierra 1500?
General Motors has announced a new Customer Satisfaction Program (warranty extension) for certain 2021 model year Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 to replace the eight-speed automatic transmissions in the vehicles. While the warranty extension is only for a precise amount of vehicles that have a specific engine type (RPO) and transmission type (MQE). However, other GMC Sierra 1500’s that only have the MQE transmission type (8 speed automatic transmission) have also been having the same reaction carrier transmission issue.
Which vehicles are included?
2021-2023 GMC Sierra trucks with the RPO MQE engine / transmission
What does NHTSA say?
The problem: in affected Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 units, the eight-speed automatic transmission (RPO MQE) may have a broken reaction carrier ring.
The hazards: a reaction carrier is part of the transmission rotating assembly and is an important aspect of its operation. A broken reaction carrier could prevent the transmission from operating as intended. This problem does not pose an immediate safety hazard to vehicle occupants.
The fix: dealers will replace the entire eight-speed automatic transmission with a new one. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.
