FCA Chrysler Recall about 850,000 vehicles for improper emissions standards

In what is slowly becoming a new trend with automobile manufacturers, a new recall has been issued for FCA vehicles and their emissions systems. Wall Street Journal posits:

The company’s voluntary recall of 862,520 vehicles includes several models of the Dodge Journey, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass, the Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

Dodge Journey, 2011-2016 model years

• Chrysler 200/Dodge Avenger, 2011-2014 model years

• Dodge Caliber, 2011-2012 model years

• Jeep Compass/Patriot, 2011-2016 model years

The recall, which includes vehicles going back to the 2011 model year, will be implemented in phases this year with the oldest vehicles being called back first, the EPA said. The recall will involve the replacement of components that are part of a vehicle’s catalytic converter.

Fiat Chrysler representatives weren’t immediately available for comment.

Owners of the affected vehicles will still be able to drive their cars. Fiat Chrysler will reach out to owners when parts become available and customers will be asked to bring them to the dealership for repair, the agency said.

Ostensibly, the recall was issued with the cooperation of the EPA, who said they '“welcome the action by Fiat Chrysler to voluntarily recall its vehicles that do not meet U.S. emissions standards," EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said in a statement.

"We will provide assistance to consumers navigating the recall and continue to ensure that auto manufacturers abide by our nation's laws designed to protect human health and the environment."

Fiat Chrysler owners can continue to drive their vehicles, the government said. Due to the "large number of vehicles involved and the need to supply replacement components — specifically to the vehicle's catalytic converter — this recall will be implemented in phases during the 2019," the EPA said
