Nissan recalling nearly a half million vehicles

Nissan is recalling over 450,000 vehicles worldwide because a brake fluid leak could cause them to catch fire.

The recall covers the following vehicles:

  1. 2015 - 2018 Nissan Murano SUV

  2. 2016 - 2018 Nissan Maxima

  3. 2017 - 2019 Infiniti QX60

  4. 2017 - 2019 Nissan Pathfinder SUVs

Documents concerning the recall can be found on NHTSA here.

Nissan says an antilock brake actuator pump can leak fluid onto a circuit board, causing electrical shorts and fires. Nissan also goes on to say a pump seal may become worn down and cause brake fluid to leak. "If the warning is ignored ... the brake fluid leak may potentially create an electrical short in the actuator circuit, which in rare instances, may lead to a fire," per the NHTSA documents.

Dealers now will replace the pumps on all of the vehicles. Notices telling owners of the safety risk will be sent Dec. 2. Parts are available for vehicles with illuminated antilock brake lights.

In a statement Friday, Nissan said a seal in the pump can leak brake fluid onto an electronic control circuit board. In rare cases, the leaks could cause an electrical short, the company said.

Summary

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Nissan Murano, 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima, and 2017-2019 Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and unrepaired, or inspected and determined to not need a repair, under recall number 18V-601. In addition, this recall expands the previous population. The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) actuator pumps may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal circuit board.

Remedy

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS actuator, free of charge. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed beginning December 2, 2019. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available, currently expected to be during summer 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: If the ABS warning light remains illuminated for more than 10 seconds after engine start up, owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures and to not drive the vehicle.
