Jeep Wrangler 4xe Under Fire: What California Owners Need to Know About Recalls and Legal Options

if you own or lease a 2020–2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, you may be affected by significant safety issues that have led to nationwide recalls and class action lawsuits. At Valero Law APC, we are committed to keeping consumers informed about their rights under California's Lemon Law.

🔥 Fire Risk and Recalls

In September 2024, Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, recalled over 194,000 plug-in hybrid SUVs worldwide—including 2020–2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe models—due to a risk of fire that can occur even when the vehicle's ignition is off. The issue stems from a high-voltage battery defect that may cause internal failure and lead to fires. Owners are advised to stop charging their vehicles and to park them outdoors, away from structures, until repairs are made .

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported 13 fires and two injuries related to this issue. The agency has opened an investigation into approximately 781,000 Stellantis vehicles over underhood fires occurring while the vehicle's ignition is in the 'OFF' state .

⚠️ Engine Shutdown Issues

In addition to fire risks, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe has faced recalls due to unexpected engine shutdowns. In December 2022, Stellantis recalled 62,909 Wrangler 4xe vehicles from model years 2021–2023 because a software issue could cause the engine to shut off while driving, increasing the risk of a crash .

Despite a previous recall in 2022 to address this issue, the NHTSA opened a new investigation in July 2024 into approximately 94,275 Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUVs manufactured between 2021 and 2024, following reports that the problem persisted .

⚖️ Legal Actions and Your Rights

Multiple class action lawsuits have been filed against Stellantis, alleging that the company knowingly sold vehicles with defects that could lead to fires and engine shutdowns. One such lawsuit, filed in March 2025, claims that Stellantis failed to properly address serious safety risks associated with the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery .

Under California's Lemon Law, if your vehicle has a substantial defect that the manufacturer cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts, you may be entitled to a replacement vehicle, a refund, or compensation for repair costs, towing, and rental expenses.

It's important to note that participating in a class action lawsuit may limit your ability to pursue individual claims. Opting out of the class action allows you to seek remedies specific to your situation under the Lemon Law.
