Volkswagen Tiguan Oil Consumption Problems Under California Lemon Law

California Volkswagen owners have noticed a potentially scary problem with their Tiguan, noting that they’re consuming an excessive amount of oil. The problem seems to revolve around the 2020 through 2023 model years, although it would be too soon to exclude the 2024 models since they’re still relatively new.

Owners of these model years have reported issues such as:

  • Frequent low oil warnings shortly after oil changes.

  • Burning oil at a rate of approximately 1 quart every 800 miles.

  • Oil leaks leading to significant oil loss, sometimes requiring multiple quarts to be added between scheduled oil changes

This is obviously worrying since, if an engine doesn’t have enough oil, it can cause poor performance, knocking noises, and even catastrophic failure. Volkswagen has stated that oil consumption of up to 1 quart per 1,200 miles is considered acceptable. However, many owners have experienced consumption rates exceeding this guideline.

Typically, the first step to diagnosing an oil consumption problem would be to have the dealership perform an oil consumption test. That said, dealerships HATE doing this since it requires multiple visits to the dealership, and, if the Tiguan fails the oil consumption test, the dealership will have to replace the engine under warranty, which can take a lot of time.

Potential causes for the excessive oil consumption include:

  • Faulty Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valves, which can lead to increased oil usage.

  • Defective valve stem seals, resulting in oil leaks and burning.

  • Weak oil control rings, contributing to higher oil consumption.

In response to these issues, some owners have undergone oil consumption tests at dealerships. If a vehicle fails this test, potential remedies include (as noted above) replacing the PCV valve, valve stem seals, or, in severe cases, the engine.
