571,000 Kia owners urged to register for potential class action over vehicle recall
Because the tow hitch harnesses can catch fire while the vehicles are being driven or parked, Hyundai and Kia are advising the owners of more than 571,000 SUVs and minivans in the United States to park them outside.
The vehicles are being recalled by the Korean automakers, who are also advising owners to park them away from buildings while repairs are being done.
Hyundai models from 2019 to 2023 Santa Fe, 2021 to 2023 Santa Fe Hybrid, 2022 and 2023 Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid, and 2022 and 2023 Santa Cruz are among those that are affected. The Carnival minivan from 2022 and 2023 is the only Kia model that is vulnerable. They all feature Hyundai or Kia tow hitch harnesses that were either installed by dealers or were part of the original equipment.
In documents made public by American safety regulators on Thursday, Korean manufacturers claim that even when the ignition is turned off, water can enter a circuit board on the hitches and result in a short circuit.
No injuries were reported in the one fire and five heat damage events reported by Hyundai. No injuries or fires have been reported in Kia.
Until a remedy is available, dealers will initially remove the fuse and tow hitch computer module. Later, a new fuse and wire extension with an upgraded, waterproof connector will be installed. Owners will be informed beginning on May 16.
