GM Vortec Oil Consumption Class Action Certified
A class action regarding oil consumption in a wide range of General Motors vehicles has been certified in California and a few other states. The class action alleges that Vortec 5300 engines have defects that cause excessive oil consumption that will ultimately result in engine damage. This is very similar to the Chevrolet Equinox / GMC Terrain oil consumption class action law suit last year. The lawsuit alleges the Vortec 5300 engines have piston rings that “do not maintain sufficient tension to keep oil in the crankcase" which allows oil to “burn[] or accumulate[] as carbon buildup on the combustion chamber’s surfaces.”
The affected class vehicles here are:
2011-2014 GMC Sierra
2011-2014 GMC Yukon
2011-2014 GMC Yukon XL
2011-2014 Chevrolet Avalanche
2011-2014 Chevrolet Silverado
2011-2014 Chevrolet Suburban
2011-2014 Chevrolet Tahoe
The name of the class action is Sloan, et al., v. General Motors LLC. and the relevant portion of the order is below:
