Nissan Rogue Automatic Braking Problems
The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), the U.S. government’s road safety agency is investigating complaints that the automatic emergency braking on the Nissan Rogue can turn on for no apparent reason. The Defect Petition to NHTSA, which can be accessed here, says:
NHTSA received a defect petition (DP19-001) from the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) on March 21, 2019 alleging that the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system on Model Year (MY) 2017-2018 Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport vehicles was engaging in cases where there was no obstruction in the path of the vehicle. The CAS petition additionally alleges that, based on Nissan's actions, the manufacturer is aware of the issue due to issuing a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) launching two "Quality Actions," and initiating a "Customer Service Initiative" in relation to it. CAS contends that Nissan's actions do not represent an adequate long-term solution to the problem, as the action is only available during the basic coverage period of the warranty. CAS also argues that the alleged failures are an unreasonable risk to safety and views Nissan's communications as not acknowledging the potential safety issue involved, instead treating the alleged problem as a performance update.
The probe covers about 554,000 Rogue small SUVs from the 2017 and 2018 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said 843 owners complained to the agency and to Nissan about the problem. Owners reported 14 crashes and five injuries. NHTSA goes on to say that Nissan issued a technical service bulletin and undertook two customer service actions related to the problem, namely NTB19-064. Investigators will try to find a cause and determine how often the false braking happens and could seek a recall.
The 2017 and 2018 Nissan Rogue are also equipped with a JATCO CVT transmission, which has been known to hesitate, shudder, shift poorly, premature fail and, generally, not operate as well as a normal gear based transmission. More information can be found here on that.
