BMW widens recall over EGR coolant issue

Due to problems with a glycol coolant, German carmaker BMW said it needed to recall a total of 1.6 million vehicles globally, making it one of the Munich-based company's largest safety recalls ever.

According to BMW, some diesel vehicles can experience glycol-leakage from the EGR (Exhaust-Gas-Recirculation) valve can occur. In combination with typical soot deposits and the high temperatures normally present in the EGR module this might result in smoldering particles. This could lead in very rare cases to the melting of the intake manifold and in extremely rare cases result in a fire.

BMW did not specify the exact models affected by the issue, but said the 1.6 million vehicles in question were all built between August 2010 and August 2017.
