Common Problems with the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado
Transmission Issues:
“Well I expected a transmission to last at least 150000 miles. the estimate to fix it is over $6000. The truck looks like new yet. This is total BS. You pay all this money for a vehicle and then this happens. I did not complain about the little stuff.”
“There's a class action law suit for the 8 speed transmission, but not the 6 speed transmissions. My 6 speed transmission should not have failed at 102,383 miles on a 2017 Chevy Silverado. I had a professional transmission shop look at it and they determined that the internal parts failed and caused metal shavings to clog up the whole system causing the failure. The shop also said they are replacing on average 5 per week of the same transmission, and this is just one shop; clearly there must be many many more out there that are failing.
We need a class action suit for this transmission, or added to the 8 speed suit... Please help!”
“This problem happened on vacation 600 miles from home. The transmission finally died 400 miles from home. We were almost hot multiple times on the side of the highway. Then my truck was left in north Texas for three weeks waiting to be fixed. Chevy only covered 800.00 of the 6,300.00 transmission replacement. I will never buy another Chevy again.”
“A/T 8l90 line pressure issues... Low speeds, like parking lot or school zone driving... Has harsh up/down shifts. I can only assume it's related to the cold 3 second engagement delay. I have been to local dealership - Huffines Chevrolet in Plano, TX once. They kept it 3 days, and they decided it was not severe enough yet...”
“Lower gear shifting results in deep clunking and significant jerking. Problem comes and goes but is becoming more frequent. Unsatisfactory operation for a 2.5 yo vehicle. I have already had to personally fix multiple issues on this truck. The dealerships are worthless and seek $$$ only.”
Engine Problems:
“Was driving down the road at 65 and the truck shut down completely and had control of steering that time. Put truck in neutral and it restarted. Then was in a gas station getting gas then went to pull out after filling up and the wheels jerked and almost broke my wrist the instrument cluster said stibilatrac and shut down. Went to restart then the instrument panel said lower driver window then close. It did this one more time in the gas station parking lot.”
“One random morning engine made funny noises. By time I left work engine light flashing and stability control wouldn't turn off. Dropped it off to dealership told me it's 4500 to fix one lifter that failed 7500 to fix all. They know it a problem that GM issues letter on what they recommend to fix, but no recall. My truck warranty expired on 10/2022 and incident happened on 01/2023 my truck had 32987 miles when dropped off after repair 32997 miles. If issue is know and class action in place why hasn't GM issued a recall.”
“In my truck it goes from V8 to V4 and I want it to stay in V8 all the time. Also, I have 5.3 engine, and cuz it goes into V4, that means that the back 2 lifters isn't getting enough oil, which can cause those lifters to lock up. I think those trucks that have that issue need to be recalled, cuz if the lifters lock up it can cause the engine to lock up and cause the truck to have an accident and possibly hurt a lot of people. Also, yes there are tuners you can buy to stop the V4 part, but who knows what they can mess up in the computer part.”
“The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving from a complete stop, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission was overheating. The dealer also informed the contact that the wiring harness and the transmission fluid temperature sensor needed to be replaced under a Technical Service Bulletin. The vehicle was not repaired; however, the check engine warning light was reset. The contact referenced GM Recall Number: N192291660. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.”
Suspension and Steering Concerns:
“While turning a corner at a reduced speed the Power Steering went out and I couldn-??t turn the wheel to the right. I almost ran into a car pulling out of the street I was turning into. a few seconds later the Power Steering came back on.”

The contact stated that after coming to a complete stop at a red traffic light and attempting to turn the steering wheel in either direction, the steering wheel would forcefully jerk to the opposite direction and the dashboard instrument panel would blink off and the message 'Stabilizer" was displayed. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet notified. The failure mileage was 52,000.”
“Driving long distances caused ball joints and a arms to break. First trip was right front a arm and ball joint second was left front both were replaced and a year later left front went out again this happened while driving. New ti tired were worn out on one trip.”
“The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that there was an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle while driving up an incline at slow speeds. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to coulter Buick GMC tempe (7780 S autoplex loop, tempe, AZ 85284) where the manufacturer was informed of the issue and a factory representative was sent out to inspect the vehicle. The factory representative then informed him that there were no found issues with the vehicle. The contact then took the vehicle to jerry seiner Chevrolet (1990 N pinal ave, casa grande, AZ 85122) where the contact pointed out that there was wearing on the front two tires that he believed was related to the suspension. The vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 1,700.”
Brakes Problems:
“Brake pedal becomes hard/stiff to apply at low speed. Normally happens after driving at highway speeds.”
“In slow driving the braking system is requires significant effort and requires increased distance to stop. service braking system message comes across the dash and goes away after a restart of the vehicle. GM has a recall for this issue but will not perform the programming required a second time despite it being a known manufactures defect.”
“The truck at low speeds, In parking lots the brake pedal gets stiff. Only when i hit the gas the brake assist engages. Brake pedal gets super stiff almost as if it doesnt want to brake. In reverse its worse I am aware there is a recall for this But not pertaining to my vehicles vin number”
“Brake becomes stuff and hard to press. This happens at low speeds at low engine speed. Brake pedal will sometimes vibrate. Message to check brake assist has occurred one time.”
