Common Problems with the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado

chevy silverado 2016 problems

Transmission Issues:

“I have a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4x4 that will be going through it's 3rd transmission replacement. The initial transmission went out at 94k mile. Fortunately covered by warranty. The 2nd transmission went out with 79k miles on it. Also covered by warranty. Now the fun part. The 3rd transmission went out with 78k miles on it and the dealer is saying it's out of warranty with a price tag of $8k miles. This is a daily driver with no towing or off-roading done on it. I have reached out to GM for assistance in this matter. No vehicle should go through 3 transmissions in less than 5 years. All 3 transmissions went out without warning and gave a check engine code of p0700 and p0796. This is my 1st GM vehicle and quite possibly my last. I have never experienced such poor quality before. I am waiting to hear back as to what GM and the dealer are going to do to assist in this matter as this is a sign of a faulty product that should be covered by them.”

“THIS IS THE SIXTH SILVERADO THAT I HAVE LEASED OR OWNED. NOW THAT I AM RETIRED I DO NOT PLAN TO REPLACE IT IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS SO I SUCKED UP THE COST FOR REPLACEMENT. INTERESTINGLY I CALLED AN INDEPENDENT TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST AND TOLD HIM I JUST CAME FROM THE DEALER WITH THE BAD NEWS THAT I NEEDED A NEW ONE. HIS RESPONSE BEFORE I TOLD HIM WHAT VEHICLE ...." LET ME GUESS....IT'S A 2018 SILVERADO." I SAID IT WAS A 2016 AND HE SAID HE'S DOING ABOUT 8-10 A MONTH 2016-2019, WITH 2018 THE WORST.”

“If you spend 50,000 on a truck, you don't expect to have to fix it shortly after warranty is up, ESPECIALLY when Chevrolet knew there were issues with transmissions. A GM owner all my life - but I will buy Ford or Dodge from here on out...”

“Transmission issues. I was driving and thought my truck started skipping a little didn't think much of it. I stopped at gas station. Started to put off and my truck wouldn't move.”

“This particular model truck has significant number of transmission failures. The transmission completely fails and is unrepairable. For the miles driven on my truck I should not have had this problem at all. I know for sure I am not buying another Chevrolet truck again.”

Electrical System Problems:

“My vehicle just randomly shuts off, mainly when making a turn. I took it in to the dealership and had several repairs made but none of them fixed the problem. It's definitely dangerous I almost had an accident at least 3 times. I feel it's electrical due to the fact everything shuts off, the dash usually flashes before it shuts off. All electronics shut down and the vehicle turns completely off with no control of steering. I've come to the conclusion it's electrical so I'm searching for a solution.”

“Son was driving truck in a straight line when it lost all power. Although we have experienced issues during turns that I have noted before here, this is the first incident while driving in a straight line.”

“Myself, My wife, and my oldest son have all three experienced a loss of complete power in the truck during turns. All power on the dash, steering, and stereo goes out. The last incident required my wife to put the vehicle in park and turn the truck off and back on to get it to start.”

Engine Problems — Engine Vibration; Excessive Oil Consumption; Knocking; Check Engine Light; Faint Hissing/Scratching/Tick Noise Only When Accelerating; Loses Power And Bogged Down; Surges Forward After Releasing Gas Pedal; Vehicle Shuts Down While Driving.

Steering Problems:

“The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 25-30 MPH, the power steering became inoperable. The steering wheel was difficult to turn. The power steering fault message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and the contact was informed that the part to repair the vehicle was on backorder. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 104,000.”

“Power steering failed for the second time. First time dealer "flashed" ECU and solved the problem. Second time the ECU has been determined to be burned out. Not just burned out but not easily replaceable as it is welded to the rack and pinion steering! according to the VIN on the truck it shouldn't even need the recall. If not, then please tell me what would cause such a catastrophic failure in a vehicle with 26,000 miles on it. Does it take someones' death to be worthy of a recall?”

“Had momentary steering loss preceded by an electrical glitch. System recovered after a few seconds. A steering warning appeared on the display but no code was triggered. This is similar to the recall problems on the 2015 Silverado.”

“The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while making left and right turns, the steering wheel started to jerk, and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle took approximately five minutes to restart. The stabili-trak warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the ground and live battery cable in the steering wheel needed to be replaced due to low voltage. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.”

Brakes Problems:

“My 2016 Chevy Silverado had intermittent hard braking. Especially at slower speeds the brake pedal would get very hard to press and needed a lot of effort to stop. I was especially concerned having newer drivers in my household that the truck was unsafe. I nearly hit others vehicles especially at stoplights and in parking lots. The vehicle was taken to the GM dealer who said it was under recall and completed the repairs. However even though the recall repairs were completed the vehicle still continued to have hard braking issues. It was not resolved until I had the brake vacuum booster pump replaced by a 3rd party as GM was unwilling to complete the repair under the recall”

“Backing up truck to put a boat in the water and no brakes had put push really hard to stop the truck from going in to the lake. When moving slowly there is hardly any brakes on the truck”

“Backing up slowly with/without a trailer and have to pump the brakes to stop or stand on the brakes or pumping the brakes and having to use the emergency brake to stop, rev up the engine, put in reverse and have to do the previous steps all over again. This only happens going slowly in reverse. I was told by a mechanic it could be the vacuum pump or TSB on the vacuum pump. No warning messages display. This is a safety risk to myself and others and could cause an accident.”
