Common Problems with the 2017 Chevrolet Impala
Powertrain, Transmission Issues:
“Vehicle jerks and shakes when I accelerate. Took to dealership stated torque issue in transmission. New transmission needed. Purchased Nov 2020 from same dealership only has 112500 miles. This should be recall.”
“When driving up hill at low speed a rough cluck occurs when gear changes take place between 2nd to 1st gear.”
“Transmission failure of my 2017 Chevy imapla lt while driving on interstate on 9/26/20. I have 164,000 on the vehicle and according to vehiclereports.com the lifetime expectancy of these types of vehicles are only 160,000. The torque converter inside on the transmission are known for failing and costing many customers such as myself tons in repair costs. There are many consumer complaints online of the bad shifting in 1st and 2nd gear on these vehicles. The transmission jerked so bad repeatedly until it caused headaches.”
“The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Impala. While driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle stalled and jerked forward. In addition, the emission system and check engine warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to crest Chevrolet (909 w 21st St, san bernardino, ca 92405, 909-713-6481) where the battery was replaced, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer where it was diagnosed that there was an unknown valve leak. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. While driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle jerked and caused the contact to lose control. The vehicle crashed into a concrete divider and the front driver's side tire blew out. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was damaged and towed to the same dealer. A police report was not filed. There were no injuries. The manufacturer was called, but no one answered the phone. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 37,000.”
Electrical System Problems:
“A/C Was blowing warm air. Took vehicle to service center for repair. Air compressor was replaced. After 2 days of driving a total of 40 miles, warm air continued to blow. Returned to service center only to find an Evaporator core failure. GM issued a bulletin N182186881 regarding this repair and they advised to file this complaint.”
“nce driven, car will not re-start. This will happen randomly. No clicking, no dash lights, absolutely nothing; as if no battery in car. Had it diagosed in shop twice now, can not find anything wrong (cannot duplicate no start). I noticed in car complaints.com that someone in horn lake, ms had smilar issue while driving on 3 different occasions. I believe this is a seriuos safety issue!!!!”
“The hmi module has gone out.this affects the rear view camera and the entire display. Secondly, since then the power steering has also gone out on the car while in motion!! it went out suddenly. Brand new battery still not resolved. These problems are both electrical and seem to be now common problems. GM should issue recall as this can cause major accident and loss of life. The absence of rear camera makes vehicle out of compliance with the laws stating that all later models should have camera. There is nothing that can cause these problems. It is simply a defect in the electrical system design. These problems cost thousands of dollars to fix and usually don't malfunction till after warranty has expired.”
Engine Problems:
“2017 Chevy Impala 3.6L engine exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold / turbo charger. Resulting in exhaust fumes leaking driver/passenger area could cause fire and or damage to engine. Checking on the customer review and complaints page on the internet I have a lot of other complaints even to the point one persons wife developed lung cancer possible related to inhaling the exhaust according to her doctor. Who knows but I had a hard time getting my car to pass NC inspection because of the lake, please advise. As I am hard of hearing and didn't know I had this problem until the local NC Inspection station pointed it out all I knew was I could smell it or something. PS the email is that of my local mechanic, as I don't have one or how to even turn a computer on.”
“Upon after starting the car a noise was coming from front of engine. I took a video and saw fire coming from the front left catalytic converter between the flange and the converter. The converter separated itself from the flange. The car, a 2017 has only 50000 miles on it always garaged and no accidents Luckily caught the converter problem before it completely blew itself off the flange and caused a fire.”
“The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power while depressing the accelerator pedal. The vehicle also failed to start intermittently. Neither the dealer nor manufacturer were made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000.”
“The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that hot air was blowing out the vents. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to bellamy strickland Chevrolet Buick GMC (145 industrial blvd, mcdonough, ga 30253, (770) 954-3000) where the vehicle was diagnosed with an evaporator core leak. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.”
Air Bags Problems:
“An airbag alert sounds very often, and the passenger airbag indicator shows that it is off. The vehicle has been taken to a dealer and they were not able to find the issue when running the diagnostics. The alarm continues to intermittently sound, and indicator shows the passenger airbag is off. This is of high concern that the airbag most likely will not deploy in case of impact.”
“My airbag light has been on now roughly two months and sometimes I'm actually scared to drive the car hoping that it won't deploy while I'm driving but it's my only means of transportation to get back and forth to work.I have checked all fuses I have gotten someone to put a tester light on it to make sure the wires are not brokenand there is no problem with the fuses all the wires so I have no idea what the problem is and the car was stationary when it first came”
“Airbag light started coming on and going off randomly. It began becoming more frequent so I took it to ourisman Chevrolet to get it checked out. I was told that the passenger seat occupancy sensor and airbag module were bad and needed to be replaced, and for $1979 they could repair it, imagine that. I let them know that if I had to put that kind of money in an airbag every 55,000 miles I would be looking at an airbag light for the next 10 years.”
“The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Impala. While driving various speeds, the air bag warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to coughlin GM of marysville (15801 us-36, marysville, oh 43040, (937) 644-9000) where the contact was informed that the passenger seat sensor was defective. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 31,000. Updated 11/28/18”
“2017. Chevrolet Impala. Consumer writes in regards to a malfunction with passenger side airbag. The consumer stated his wife is 4'11 and weighs 88 pounds. She uses a cushion to maintain front and side vision while seated in the front passenger seat. Because of this, the air bag does not detect her in the seat. The dealer advised there is no modification possible”
