Transmission Issues:
“Several transmission components and functions have failed. This has caused dangerous lurching while gears change and the loss of the ability to move forward, all while driving and without warning. The transfer case also failed, resulting in similar lurching, as well as bouncing and grinding. This problem has been attempted to be repaired multiple times with the dealership returning the car each time claiming that it was repaired, inspected and found good. In all cases the same problem reoccurred within 50 miles of driving. There were no warning lights or symptoms leading up to the failure which would worsen as time went on. The lurching generally occurred when reducing speed, which would unexpectedly bounce the vehicle towards other slowing vehicles, greatly increasing the likelihood of rear ending another driver. When the complete loss of forward function occurred, it had done so similarly while slowing down, which nearly resulted in another driver rear ending us. Fortunately, the reverse gear still worked and the car was able to be removed from the road. The unexpected nature of the behavior of the car and the failures in general, paired with the false assurance from the dealership that the problem was fixed, left the driver highly likely of being involved in a collision.”
“The gear shift when in drive can be pushed into other gears without pushing the button. When driving down the highway going 70 mph, my dog has more than 10 times pushed it into neutral. It’s extremely dangerous.”
“This is a well known issue with the Equinox. The rear main seal goes and oil pours out the vehicle causing other issues to the engine, like the intake manifold. My rear exhaust manifold was cracked and now codes are coming up for timing chain. The dealer wanted over $2600 to repair since my warranty was expired. Haven’t had the car 3 yrs and I personally only put under 50 K miles on the vehicle. Still owe $12000 for a junk SUV. The recall only covers 2010-2014 models yet GM is putting the same engine in newer models. This should be recalled due to all the complaints. My mechanic sees this all the time with the Equinox. I found a mechanic to repair for $1560+ but did not include timing chain. Still have check engine light on.”
“The vehicle shutters when shifting up and hard shifts down in lower power bands.”
Electrical Problems:
“Had a no start on two times, starter would act like a dead battery. Then a week or so later the Instrument lights went out and back on and then out again, so did the bluetooth went out black screen. not fixed yet”
“THE RADIO QUIT WORKING. THE DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND SAID I NEED A NEW RADIO. THE CAR IS ONLY 2 YEARS OLD. IN TALKING WITH OTHER OWNERS, MANY ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THE RADIO WILL NOT TURN ON. THIS ALSO IS HOW TO CONTROL THE HEAT/AC, THE BACKUP CAMERA, THE NAV SYSTEM. THE DEALERSHIP AND MAKER ARE BOTH REFUSING TO ADMIT TO A DEFECTIVE SYSTEM. THIS IS A 2017 CHEVY EQUINOX.”
“TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 CHEVROLET EQUINOX. WHILE WAITING AT A RED LIGHT, A FIRE STARTED UNDER THE DASHBOARD. THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE BEFORE IT BECAME ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE POLICE DEPARTMENT WAS NOT PRESENT. THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A JUNK YARD AND THEN RETRIEVED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SWEENEY CHEVROLET/GMC IN YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO DUE TO A BUZZING NOISE EMERGING FROM THE ENGINE, EVEN WHILE PARKED IN THE GARAGE. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE NOISE WAS DUE TO THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER REBOOTING. THE INSURANCE COMPANY DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,800.”
“AFTER STARTING THE CAR THIS MORNING THERE IS NO INTERIOR NOISES. NO BLINKER, NO RADIO, DISPLAY ON RADIO IS BLANK. RADIO AND EVERYTHING WORKED THE EVENING BEFORE WITH NO ISSUES AT ALL. CHECKED ALL FUSES AND STILL NOTHING. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET THIS APPEARS TO BE A WIDESPREAD CHEVY ISSUE. TO SPECIFY THE VEHICLE WAS FIRST IN PARK AND RUNNING WHEN THE PROBLEM WAS NOTICED. IT CONTINUED TO BE A PROBLEM WHILE DRIVING (CITY AND HIGHWAY) AND CONTINUED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED MULTIPLE TIMES.”
Engine Problems:
“Car keeps throwing a P0014 code. Have changed the camshaft position sensor, changed oil and air filter. 200 miles later, check engine light is back on and throwing P0014 code again”
“Car is burning to much oil l. Per tsb the accepted rate of oil consumption for engines used in tge vehicles referenced is 0.946 liter (1qt) in 3200 km (200) mi). Just got an oil change on 5/2/22 it was 101,612. when I got it changed.. And currently it's at 103,346. When I check dip stick and oil level it had approximately half of quart of oil remaining. Took to courtesy mitsubishi In Attleboro Massachusetts where I brought the car because of engine warranty. You can smell oil in the interior of vehicle when driving. No oil leak coming from vehicle”
“The valve timing is out of position from a timing chain jumped out of position. There are oil flow problems to the phaser from incorrect oil”
“PVC pipe froze, causing engine to cease up, blew out rear plug of the engine, drained the entire engine of oil and entail blew the engine. I was driving at 65 mph when this happened. No warning lights came on that the engine was overheated, and car just ceased up and blew while I was driving. GM did absolutely nothing to help with this issue, I was left to fix this problem alone. My father replaced the whole engine by himself so that we could trade it in eventually.”
“Oil consumption issues, faulty valves caused decreased engine pressure light, engine light. Unable to go over 25 m/h and now will not even start. Told this is a known issues with vehicle and I need a new engine.”
Brakes Problems:
“I was driving at 330am had cruise control to 70 the speed limit and when I hit my breaks the cruise control didn't disengage instead it speed faster making me lose control of me vehicle took out a sign and went over the hill. My vehicle was totaled.”
“ON JANUARY 16, 2021, I WAS TRAVELING DOWN MAIN STREET IN ROUND ROCK, TEXAS WHERE I REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH. AS I SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES TO STOP, I FELT MY BRAKES STARTED PULSATING, MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR ME TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. MY CAR WAS DEEMED UNREPAIRABLE, AND WAS A TOTAL LOSS. THE RADIATOR WAS CRACKED, AND THE FRAME WAS BENT MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO OPEN THE DOOR. I HAD A COUPLE BRUISES NOT SEVERE THAT I NEEDED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL. MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY DURING THE ACCIDENT, WHICH TO MYSELF DID NOT SEEM TO BE NORMAL. DUE TO THE SEVERITY OF THE DAMAGES TO MY CAR, IT WAS CONSIDERED NOT OPERATIONAL AND HAD TO BE TOWED.”
“I WAS DRIVING THE CAR ON FREEWAY. I TRIED SLOWING THE CAR BY PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT IT WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO STOP THE SLOW THE CAR HENCE CAME THE SITUATION WHERE I HAD TO HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL HARDER TO ABLE TO STOP THE CAR TO AVOID THE ACCIDENT. I WAS NOT ABLE TO BREAK AT ALL AND IT ENDED UP COLLIDING WITH THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. IT WAS SURPRISING TO ME THAT NOT A SINGLE AIRBAG WAS POPPED OPEN, GIVEN THE MAGNITUDE OF AN ACCIDENT AND THE DAMAGE IT CAUSED (ESTIMATED DAMAGE OVER $10,000). I HAD MY SON AND TWO OF HIS FRIENDS IN THE CAR. IT IS VERY SHOCKING THAT THE AIRBAGS OR BREAK DID NOT WORK IN BRAND NEW SUV.”
